Inside Renu’s Flood Diary: 10 Key Moments
- Renu’s home region is flooded every year by the Kosi, Panar, Mahananda and Ganga rivers. Even so, he cannot swim, because he grew up on barren, unploughed land.
- Before this flood, he had worked in flood areas as a boy scout, volunteer, political worker and relief worker and had written reportages such as Jai Ganga, Dayan Kosi and Hadiyon ka Pul.
- He first experienced a flood in a city in 1967, when the Punpun river’s water entered Rajendranagar. This time, he stocked fuel, potatoes, candles, matches, drinking water and Compazine tablets.
- News spread that the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s residence were flooded and that Golghar was surrounded by water. The rickshaw puller joked that the coffee house must already be under water.
- Seeing the fast, foaming water near the coffee house, Renu called it “मृत्यु का तरल दूत” (death’s liquid messenger) and turned back.
- At Gandhi Maidan, a crowd as big as a Dussehra crowd watched the water. A villager taunted that the Patna babus hadn’t cared when Danapur was drowning.
- When the radio reported that water had reached the studio steps, shops closed, but paan sales strangely went up, because nobody seemed truly afraid.
- In 1947, his guru Satinath Bhaduri warned him that dry islands would already be crowded with creatures seeking shelter, and told him to carry medicine for pakahi ghaav (rotting sores), matches and kerosene.
- In 1949, a sick young man refused to board the relief boat without his dog. In a flooded Musahar settlement, hungry villagers still laughed and danced the balwahi folk dance.
- When the water finally arrived at 5:30 a.m., he watched it race in like a herd of brown sheep. He wished he had a movie camera or tape recorder and then admitted that even his pen had been stolen.
Small Details That Decide Your Score
- “पानी कहाँ तक आ गया है?” shows people’s curiosity and nervous excitement, not real panic.
- The Danapur taunt criticises city people for ignoring villagers’ suffering.
- Renu’s flood memories come from 1937, 1947, 1949 and 1967, so keep the years straight.
- Typical diseases in flood areas include pakahi ghaav, and the essential supplies are matches and kerosene.
- The form of the text is a reportage (रिपोर्ताज): a vivid first-hand report mixed with personal memories.
“Is Jal Pralay Mein” reads less like a disaster report and more like a diary of human nature under pressure. Renu notices everything: the joking rickshaw puller, the man selling paan during the crisis, the young people treating a flood like a picnic and the villager who would not leave his dog behind. Objective questions on this chapter often depend on these small moments, so pay attention to who said what and why. If an option sounds dramatic but doesn’t match Renu’s calm, observant tone, it is probably the wrong one.
Is Jal Pralay Mein: Explanations for Every Question
The textbook asks you to go beyond facts and explain attitudes: why paan sales rose, why the writer felt he had “nothing” at the end and what a flood teaches about preparing for disasters. Our NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Hindi Kritika Chapter 1 answer each of these questions with examples from the text, including the “मृत्यु का तरल दूत” image and the dog-and-owner episode. They are a good next step once you have checked your MCQ score.
