- Goswami Tulsidas lived from 1532 to 1623 and died in Kashi. His major works include Ramcharitmanas, Kavitavali, Gitavali, Dohavali, Vinay Patrika and Hanuman Bahuk.
- He wrote Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi, and Vinay Patrika and Kavitavali in Braj Bhasha. This extract comes from the Balkand of Ramcharitmanas.
- When Parshuram arrives in his fierce form, the kings in the court tremble and bow full-length, giving their own and their fathers’ names, out of fear and formal courtesy.
- King Janak bows his head and has Sita pay her respects to Parshuram, while Vishwamitra presents Ram and Lakshman to him.
- Seeing the pieces of Shiva’s bow on the ground, Parshuram angrily demands that Janak name the person who broke it, or he will overturn Janak’s entire kingdom.
- The other kings secretly rejoice at Janak’s trouble (kutil bhoop harshe man mahin), while Sita’s mother regrets that fate has ruined a settled matter.
- For the worried Sita, half a moment feels as long as an age (aradh nimesh kalap sam beeta), which is an example of exaggeration (atishayokti).
- Ram, feeling neither joy nor sorrow, humbly says “होइहि केउ एक दास तुम्हारा” (the bow-breaker must be one of your own servants), showing his modesty and dignity.
- Parshuram replies that whoever broke the bow is his enemy, like Sahasrabahu and must step forward or all the kings will die.
- Lakshman smiles and mocks him, saying they broke many small bows as children without such anger. Parshuram retorts that Shiva’s bow is no ordinary bow, which sets up the clash that follows.
