Class 9 Hindi Ganga Chapter 6 MCQs
Important Points from Reedh Ki Haddi by Jagdish Chandra Mathur
- Jagdish Chandra Mathur was born in 1917 in Shahjahanpur and died in 1978. He was an ICS officer who served as Director General of Akashvani (All India Radio) and played a major role in shaping Hindi drama.
- His major works include Konark, which is his best-known play, Bhor ka Tara, O Mere Sapne, Pahla Raja and Shardiya.
- The characters are Uma (the girl), Ramswaroop (her father), Prema (her mother), Gopalprasad (the boy’s father), Shankar (the boy) and Ratan (the household helper).
- Ramswaroop gets the room ready for the visit and arranges a harmonium and sitar so that Uma’s talents can be shown off. The play opens with comic scenes involving Ratan.
- Gopalprasad is an educated lawyer but holds outdated views. He wants a bride who is at most a matriculate and he compares the situation to the peacock having feathers and the lion having a mane while the female does not.
- Shankar is weak in character and even in posture. His father scolds him for sitting with a bent back, which hints at the title.
- When Uma comes in wearing glasses, the visitors are alarmed. Ramswaroop lies and says she wears them because of an eye problem, not because of studying.
- Uma sings Meera’s bhajan “मेरे तो गिरधर गोपाल” but stops when her eyes meet Shankar’s.
- Uma finally speaks up, saying that girls are not furniture or helpless animals to be inspected and bought. She also reveals that Shankar was chased away from the girls’ hostel.
- As Gopalprasad storms out, Uma tells him to check whether his son has a backbone (reedh ki haddi). The play ends ironically when Ratan arrives with the butter.
Revision Tips for Reedh Ki Haddi Objective Questions
