Important Questions from Board Papers
Linear Equations in two variables

Question 1:
A bird flying in the same direction as that of hr wind, covers a distance of 45 km in 2 hours 30 minutes. But it takes 4 hours 30 minutes to cover the same distance when it flies against the direction of the wind. Ignoring conditions other than the wind conditions, find

(i) the speed of the bird in still air

(ii) the speed of the wind.

Question 2:
A fraction becomes 9/11, if 2 is added to both its numerator and denominator. If 3 is added to both its numerator and the denominator, it becomes 5/6. Find the fraction.

Question 3:
Scooter charges consist of a fixed charge and remaining depending upon the distance travelled in km. if a person travels 10 km, he pays ₹ 65 and for travelling 16 km, he pays ₹ 95. Find the fixed charges and the rate per km.

Question 4:
(a) A shopkeeper sells a shirt at 8% profit and saree at 10% discount, thereby getting a sum of ₹ 1008. If she had sold the shirt at 10% profit and the saree at 8% discount, she would have got ₹ 1028. Find the cost price of the shirt and the list price (price before discount) of the saree.
(b) A man sold chair and table together for ₹ 760 thereby making a profit of 25% on chair and 10% on table. By selling them together for ₹ 767.50, he would have made a profit of 10% on the chair and 25% on the table. Find the cost price of each.

Question 5:
A fraction is equivalent to 1/3, if its numerator decreases by 2 and its denominator increases by 5. When its numerator is doubled and 3 is subtracted from its denominator, the fraction becomes 8/5. Find the original fraction.

Question 6:
A wizard having powers of mystic in conditions and magical medicines seeing a cock fight going on, spoke privately to both the owners of cocks. To one, he said ‘if your bird wins, then you give me your stake money, but if you do not win, I shall give you two third of that’. Going to other, he promised in the same way to give three fourths. From both of them his gain would be only 12 gold coins. Find the stake of money each of the cock-owner have.
